Excerpt:
He looked up at her on her knees in front of him and saw her eyes closed. She couldn’t see him. He was surprised. “Why are your eyes closed?”
“Because I am imagining what you look like, Mr. Stark, before I see you.”
She brought her hands to his face. “Your hair is messy and short like Tony Stark’s or Loki’s. Maybe you’re the bad guy.” She knew her voice purred on the term “bad guy.” She continued, “It is too unkempt for Peter Parker or Batman or Superman, sorry.”
She moved her hand down the side of his face. Your jaw is long and lean. May be Tony or Loki.” She moved her hands up his face to his eyebrows. “Uneven. Not Loki. His eyebrows are straight.”
Her hand came back around to his face. “You, sir, are Tony Stark.” She brought up his hood and tied it again. She pushed his head back down and opened her eyes. “Well, Mr. Stark, good evening.”
He laughed. He had expected her to look at him with her eyes. Except she hadn’t done that; she had “seen” him with her hands and then respected his privacy, his identity. “Why didn’t you look at me?”
She laughed as she sat back up again, drawing her knees to her, stretching out his jacket again. “Because, Mr. Stark, I want to protect who you think you are. I want you to want to show me who you are instead of taking that right away from you. I want you to want to do it.”
He looked at her now in amazement. She had respected who he was as a person. “Why?”
“Maybe because I want you to see me the same way I see you before I see you.” She knew she had talked in circles. “Besides, if you are Tony Stark, AKA Ironman, I can’t be Pepper. I would have to be someone else.” She thought. “Maybe I could be The Mandarin, your arch nemesis.” She laughed at that. “I could attempt to foil you at every turn.” She stood now and placed her hands on her hips, spreading her feet apart. “That’s it! I shall be The Mandarin and you shall be Tony Stark! We shall fight and I will overcome you!” She stood on the bench now, holding out her hand as if as sword was in it. “Stand now, Mr. Stark, and battle me!”
